It is an axiom of academic life that "study trips" must be boring for the kids and on a risk-taking par with a Shuttle lift off for the staff. Why should this be so?
We suspect that the answer lies in lack of planning and experience—and one of us should know. During a teaching career of 17 years, Lowell led student trips around the British Isles and Europe and discovered the secrets of a good trip after much trial and even more error:
- Use the services of an experienced local contact. Always and without fail. Good incoming operators know how to customise a tour and are on hand should anything go badly wrong.
- Do not spoon feed the students. The more they have to put into the trip by way of preparation, research and fund-raising, the more they will benefit. (Or, as Tom Lehrer once memorably put it: "Life is like a sewer. The more you put in, the more you get out.")
- Always have plans B and C to hand. Which is why we have contingencies like other people have commercials.
- Be flexible. No matter how carefully you and we plan ahead, it only takes one broken down truck on the Dublin beltway (aka the M50) to bring the place to gridlock.
With all that in mind, why book with us?
Because we have been there, seen it and done it numerous times. David and I have over 65 years' experience of tours and detours and we will be watching over you and your charges whilst you are our guests. You may not know that we are there but we will be keeping a watching brief, even if we are nowhere near the bus.
And we will use the best of our contacts and efforts to include one or two more memorable visits which would not feature on the standard "Meet the Leprechauns" tour. It is our job to take care of you—and we take great pride in doing so.
